Australia Post
Australia's Favourite Stamps 2009 marks two hundred years of postal services in Australia. In this very special year, Australia Post recognises the significance of stamps to the Australian community.

Australia's postage stamps have always celebrated their nation's greatest achievements, milestones and unique natural wonders. In total, over 2,500 different stamp designs have been issued since the first Australian stamp was released in 1850. The complete catalogue features a number of their most treasured national icons - from the kangaroo to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

As part of its bicentenary celebrations, Australia Post invited the public to vote for the favourite Australian stamps of all time from a shortlist of 150 stamps. The selection was made after consulting with a wide range of historians and designers. This ensured the shortlist represented the diversity of Australian culture and heritage, major events, significant achievements and historic milestones.

The 150 stamps appeared in daily newspapers around the country and online, with the Australian public being asked to vote for their favourite. The results, in order of popularity, were: £2 Kangaroo and Map (1913-38), followed by the 5s Opening of Sydney Harbour Bridge (1932), the 2½d Peace and Victory (1946), the 8½d Gwoya Jungarai, "One Pound Jimmy" (1950), and the 6d Kookaburra (1914).

Australian Bush Babies Marsupials are mammals that are distinguished by their particular reproductive cycle. Most female marsupials have pouches in which the young develops after spending only a short time in the mother's uterus. After birth the embryo-like offspring climbs into the mother's pouch using strong front limbs, where it remains, attached to a teat, until mature enough for independence.

This stamp issue features four species of some of the most popular Australian marsupials and their young.

Australian Parks and Gardens Public parks and gardens are for everybody. They engage and inspire people. With their trees and open spaces they are pleasant places where children play, dogs are walked, bicycles are ridden and runners jog. They are also places where people come to relax, providing people of all ages with the opportunity to enjoy nature. In modern Australia, parks are of inestimable value, providing economic, social and cultural benefits for the whole of society.

The stamps feature five city parks: Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens, Brisbane's Roma Street Parkland, Hobart's St David's Park, Canberra's Commonwealth Park and Sydney's Hyde Park.

Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne
Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens was reserved in 1848, although it was not laid out until 1859. Today it ranks as one of the city's premier parks.

Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane
Brisbane's Roma Street Parkland is renowned for its subtropical plantings. This park was the result of a major redevelopment of former railway yards completed in 2000.

St David's Park, Hobart
St David's Park in Hobart was opened in 1926, its two hectares occupying the site of Hobart's first burial ground (1804-72).

50 Years of the Cristo Rei Sanctuary With this philatelic issue the Portuguese Post Services, CTT, join the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Cristo Rei (Christ the King) Sanctuary, thereby acknowledging its historic and religious value. The inspiration for its construction came from Brazil, in 1934, when Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira visited Rio de Janeiro, where the image of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redemptor) stands. Furthermore, the reasons inducing its construction were made quite clear in the Episcopate's Pastoral Letters of 1937, 1946 and 1959. The growing contempt for God, which had taken place in some countries of Christian tradition, led the bishops to commission the construction of the monument as a sign of the affirmation of the faith of the Portuguese.

150 Years of Singapore Botanic Gardens When Sir Stamford Raffles established the first Botanic Gardens in 1822, its main purpose was to evaluate for cultivation, crops that were of potential economic importance, including those yielding fruits, vegetables, spices and other raw materials. However, without a full-time salaried director and sufficient funding, the garden languished and was closed in 1829. It was not until 30 years later, in 1859, that present Singapore Botanical Gardens was founded by the Agri-Horticultural Society. Since then, the Gardens went through numerous changes with the opening of the National Orchid Garden, a major tourist attraction today, as well as recent added features like the Visitor Centre, Ginger Garden, Evolution Garden, Children's Garden and the Botany Centre.

Today, the Gardens is geared towards entrenching itself as a tropical botanical institution of international renown, a key tourist destination and a flagship park. Significant new attractions are being planned in a continuing renewal programme.
